Library Committee
The junior year for Materials Science and Engineering students at UIUC is generally considered to be the most difficult, containing several upper level materials classes, including two laboratory courses. Students in the laboratory courses write several lab reports each semester, with detailed research and discussion sections. To facilitate research and writing of these difficult labs, our chapter decided to create a library of reference materials to be held in the computer lab for students to use while they write their reports. After consulting the professor who teaches the course, we came up with a list of books to purchase. We arranged to get keys to the display cabinets in the computer lab, where the books will be stored. The books have been purchased and several students have been recruited for a ‘library committee,’ for which members will hold weekly office hours 1 hour per night during which students can come in and check out the materials. The library is open Monday-Wednesday evenings, 7pm-8pm. We are hoping the library will continue to expand with the purchase of 1-3 books each year.
