Peer Outreach Committee
In order to improve students’ performance in their Materials Science and Engineering courses, Keramos members served as academic resources for younger students. The committee planned weekly homework help sessions for students enrolled in TAM 206, Statics & Mechanics of Materials, which is mostly comprised of sophomore students. After meeting with Prof. Keane, we were able to find out when the assignments are due and plan a time that Keramos would hold the homework help sessions. Each week two upper-class members of Keramos were available to answer questions about the current homework. One evening a week for an hour, students in the course were able to come to the Ceramics Building Student Lounge, work towards completing the assignment and have their questions answered by two Keramos members who had previously taken the class.
The MatSE Department hosted approximately 180 visitors at our High School Visit Day on Sunday, October 10. Students and family members listened to a presentation on the field of materials science and engineering, toured the Kiln House, watched demonstrations, and enjoyed a pizza supper with faculty and 19 undergraduate volunteers, many who are also Keramos members.
